Marriage: Something dumb to do

Don’t get me wrong. I admire Bruno Mars as an artist for his talent and his music.

… but calling marriage “something dumb to do” is foolish to me.

It’s a beautiful night,
We’re looking for something dumb to do.
Hey baby,
I think I wanna marry you.

After watching this proposal video, I can’t help but wonder how many times that song has played at wedding ceremonies and receptions. I can’t help but wonder how many couples this may actually be a song for. In some sense, the very thought of these possibilities breaks my heart.

If we wake up and you wanna break up that’s cool.
No, I won’t blame you;
It was fun girl.

It’s so sad that marriage has become something so fickle and fleeting in our society. As a youth, I used to constantly vow to myself that my marriage wouldn’t fall victim to this. That my marriage wouldn’t result in another number adding to this sad statistic. That our love would be the true, unconditional (agape) love spoken about in His Word. I guess He had other plans for me, as He revealed my faults as a man and the failings and results of an ungodly love.

I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised about songs like this. Still, I can’t believe that the divorce rate is over half that of the marriage rate. Of course divorce isn’t that far fetched a concept even in the church amongst believers. However, what else can be to blame but sin for this? Just as it says in the famous love chapter, (God’s) love does not fail (1 Corinthians 13).

If you’re looking for something dumb to do, I hope you don’t look to marriage.
